Volunteer Requirements

To help ensure the safety of our students and staff, all volunteers—including parents, guardians and other volunteers —must complete a Volunteer Application and Criminal Background Check Request and receive approval before volunteering in any MSD Washington Township school or activity.

Applications must be submitted at least fourteen (14) business days before the volunteer activity to allow sufficient time for processing.

Volunteer Background Check Options

MSD Washington Township offers two volunteer background check options below:

Limited Criminal History Check

  • No cost to the volunteer
  • Completed through the Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History database
  • Valid for one (1) year
  • Must be renewed annually

Limited Criminal History Check Form

Expanded Criminal History Check

  • Fee paid by the volunteer
  • Valid for three (3) years
  • Required for volunteer assignments involving:
    • Sole care, custody, or control of students
    • Overnight supervision
    • Any other assignment designated by the district

Expanded Criminal History Check Form

 

Volunteer eligibility is based on a review of criminal history information, including pending charges and convictions, in accordance with district procedures and student safety considerations. 

Volunteers Will Not Be Approved

Volunteers will not be approved if the criminal history reflects:

  • Any felony charge
  • Any felony conviction

Criminal Histories Requiring Administrative Review

The following offenses may result in denial of volunteer eligibility and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by Central Office:

  • Murder
  • Voluntary Manslaughter
  • Causing or Assisting Suicide
  • Aggravated Battery
  • Kidnapping
  • Criminal Confinement
  • Domestic Battery
  • Battery
  • Carjacking
  • Arson
  • Reckless Homicide
  • Neglect of a Dependent
  • Child Selling or Human Trafficking
  • Sex Offenses
  • Public Indecency
  • Weapons Offenses
  • Controlled Substance Offenses (excluding Marijuana)
  • Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor
  • Offenses Related to Material Harmful to Minors
  • Any other offense determined by the district to present a risk to student

Individuals who are denied volunteer approval because of pending criminal charges may request a reevaluation after those charges have been resolved.

The following are a few examples, not an inclusive list, of when a volunteer criminal background check is required.

Required Training

 

Per Indiana Code IC 20-26-5-34-2, Bullying Prevention Training is required to volunteer annually.

  • A volunteer criminal background check is required for activities such as:

    • Assisting teachers in classrooms
    • Supervising students during lunch or recess
    • Assisting with school events
    • Assisting with district-sponsored activities held off campus
    • Chaperoning field trips (including overnight trips)
    • Any assignment involving the sole care, custody, or control of students

  • At least 14 business days before volunteering.

    • The Limited Criminal History Check is free
    • The Expanded Criminal History Check requires a fee paid by the volunteer. The fee starts at $35 and may be more if the volunteer has lived in multiple counties or states.

    • Limited Criminal History: 1 year.
    • Expanded Criminal History: 3 years.

    • Yes, if you elect to complete the Limited Criminal History.
    • Expanded Criminal History background checks expire three years from the date of submission if approved.
